Stephen Bunbury LLB (Hons) LLM (Employment Law) MA (Higher Education) PgDip (Legal Practice Course) PgCert (Higher Education) SFHEA FRSA
Stephen is Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Westminster. He specialises in legal education, inclusion, equality law, disability law and academic integrity. Stephen has held various strategic leadership roles within Westminster Law School over the years which include: School Disability Tutor/Lead, Quality Lead, and Outreach Lead. He is currently the Law School’s strategic lead / Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Academic Integrity. Outside of Westminster Law School he is Programme Lead for the UoW Black History Create Programme, a student focused initiative programme funded by the University’s Quintin Hogg Trust: first decolonised ‘career-ready’ student programme written for Black students.
Stephen also acts as consultant expert for the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and is also a QAA Reviewer. Stephen is actively involved with QAA initiatives that focus on academic integrity and inclusion in higher education. His expertise in academic integrity has led to him being named academic lead for academic integrity matters at the University. He is a member of the QAA Academic Integrity Advisory Group and was involved in steering the work on remote proctoring and digital security with the QAA. His committee and network membership within the University include the BME Network and Black History Year Steering Group. Stephen is an elected staff member of Academic Council for his college (Liberal Arts and Sciences), the University’s supreme academic deliberative and decision-making body responsible for strategic oversight of all academic provision. Stephen also acts as Chair for Academic Misconduct Panels in the University. He is also a learning and teaching and EDI representative for University course validation panels.
He holds and has held a number of external positions as external examiner, external course validation panel member and external consultant for various higher education providers. Stephen serves on the Board of Directors for the International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI) and is a Non-Executive Director and Trustee of Inclusion London. He is an active member of the London and South East Academic Integrity Network (LSEAIN) where he is also Chair and founder of the International Contract Cheating Day Working Group. In addition, he is a founding member of the Putting Academic Integrity into Practice (PAiP) Working Group (LSEAIN). Stephen has worked on large scales funded projects and has been the institution’s Collaborative Project Lead partner for the University on a QAA Collaborative Enhancement funded Project (2022-2023): Improving student learning by linking inclusion/accessibility and academic integrity. In addition, Stephen is an ADR-ODR International accredited Civil and Commercial mediator.
In academic year 2021/22 and 2022/23, Stephen was seconded to the Centre for Education Teaching and Innovation (CETI) as an Academic Professional Development Fellow. He worked with colleagues collaboratively across the University to design and deliver bespoke academic professional development for schools. He is passionate about educating staff and students in understanding academic integrity, feedback, and authentic assessment practices.
Teaching
Stephen is the convenor/module leader for the following modules:

In the past, Stephen’s teaching has broadly focused on the areas of Contract Law, Law of Tort, Consumer Law, Commercial Law, Employment Law, Business Law, Disability Law, Law and Mental Health, Equality Law, Medical Law and Ethics and Legal Skills. Stephen was the LLB Contract Law (a core module) module leader for over a decade and continues his module leadership responsibilities on various elective modules within his expertise. He has also contributed to Law and Religion at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has taught law to LLB undergraduates, GDL, LLM students, Legal Apprentices at other HE institutions online and face to face.
His teaching now predominantly focuses on Disability Law, Law and Mental Health, Employment Law, Contract Law, Consumer Law, Law of Tort and Race and the Law. He teaches on foundation, undergraduate postgraduate programmes and continues to teach at other higher education institutions. His passion for innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment is demonstrated in the final year My Graduate Journal module he convenes, the final year module of the Westminster Law School which leads to a Final Year Degree Show. He has led on several undergraduate (core and elective) modules and has extensive experience in curriculum development and design. He was a recipient of a Westminster Learning and Teaching Excellence Team Award (WLTEA) with Professor Andreas Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos in 2022 for his contribution to innovation to the My Graduate Journey module, a final year core module he co-leads.
Research
Stephen’s research and scholarship interests predominantly focuses on disability law, equality law, legal education, contract law, and academic integrity. He is currently working on various collaborative initiatives within the LSEAIN. Stephen regularly presents at conferences in his areas of research and has been invited on various occasions by the QAA to deliver workshops and presentations. He is consultant editor for a leading contract law textbook: Elliott and Quinn: Contact Law. Stephen is an active PhD Supervisor and welcomes potential research student enquiries in his research areas.
