Dr Gwilym Jones

I joined Westminster in the summer of 2014, having previously been a lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London. I studied for my BA and MA degrees at the University of Wales, Swansea and took my DPhil at the University of Sussex. During my doctoral studies I was a researcher, lecturer and dramaturg at Shakespeare's Globe, and I continue to work with Globe Education on occasion. 

My research interests are concentrated in the area of early modern drama and performance. I am particularly interested in representations of the environment and theatre technologies of the Tudor and Stuart stages. These concerns intersect in my book Shakespeare's Storms (Manchester University Press, 2015), which explores Shakespeare's use of thunder and lightning in his plays. This book won the 2016 Shakespeare's Globe Book Award.

My current research involves several projects. One is a state-of-the-field article on 'Environmental Renaissance Studies', attempting to cohere and categorise the ways that ecological/ecocritical approaches to literature and drama have developed in recent early modern criticism. Another is an edition of John Marston's play The Fawn for a forthcoming anthology of plays and other texts dated 1603–4, called Stages of Transition. Finally, I am working on my next book, on Shakespeare and silence. I would be delighted to hear from fellow researchers and prospective students interested in any of these areas.
