Course summary

Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary area with ever-growing job opportunities. The degree aims to create graduates that will play a vital role in the design and manufacture of electronic equipment for healthcare. The course is targeted towards the rapidly growing and changing health care industries occupied in interdisciplinary specialisation in electronics and computer engineering expertise for prominent biomedical applications. The course provides a solid understanding of the fundamentals of biomedical electronic principles and computing, to provide solutions for issues related but not limited to the design and development of various diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices. The project-based modules which are an integral part of this degree provides you with the opportunity to develop your teamwork and project management skills.

Credit Level 4

Subjects of study include:

  • Analog System Engineering
  • Digital System Design and Implementation
  • Fundamentals of Biomedical Electronics
  • Professional Engineering Practice and Industrial Management
  • Robotic Systems Project
  • Signals and Communication Principles

Credit Level 5

You will have the opportunity to take a placement in industry between Years 2 and 3. This gives you practical experience in the workplace and a competitive edge in the job market. It also contributes to your professional development towards Chartered Engineer status.

Subjects of study include:

  • Advanced Biomedical Electronics
  • Individual Project in Biomedical Electronics

Plus three options from:

  • Analog Microelectronics
  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Embedded and Real Time System Architectures
  • Mobile Communication Systems

Entry Requirements

Typical offer

  • A levels – CCC/AA including at least one technical subject
  • International Baccalaureate – 26 points including 5 in any Higher Level technical subject
  • Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma/Diploma – DMM/D*D* including Merit in Maths at Level 3
  • Access to HE Diploma – Pass in Engineering with 45 credits at Level 3 with a minimum of 27 Level 3 credits at Merit or Distinction.
  • Advanced Diploma - Grade C in a relevant subject eg IT or Engineering, and a relevant ASL at Grade C

Plus GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above or equivalent grades in Key Skills (Functional Skills qualifications are not accepted).

Careers

This program will develop students as engineers that will have skills to work in the areas of biomedical engineering, embedded systems, electronic engineering and so work for companies like BBC and BSkyB as well as electronics and technology giants such as BT, Nokia, British Aerospace, Philips and Mitsubishi, and to smaller private companies.  Students also go on to work in the financial district in the City of London while others have started up their own businesses in manufacturing or consultancy.  Opportunities also exist for postgraduate study leading to PhD qualifications

The programme aims to create graduates who are well prepared for entry into a career in not only the engineering industries but also in any field requiring engineering skills.  With an industry-wide shortage, high quality engineering graduates are enjoying a choice of job opportunities with good salaries.


The course provides an exciting, enjoyable and rewarding learning experience which will serve as a solid foundation for a professional engineering career leading eventually to registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

Companies that are involved with our course, including industrial placements, are Intel, Broadcom, GE Aviation Systems Ltd., Smardtv, BBC, IBM UK Ltd., Catapult Satellite Applications, Spirent, NHS, Schneider Electric, STFC, TfL, Network Rail, ESA, Edwards and Siemens.

Our Career Development Centre has just been shortlisted for the Best University Careers Service in the National Undergraduate Employability Awards for 2017.

With a growing network of over 3,000 employers around the world and a team of experienced careers consultants, we are here to help you succeed.

In 2015–16, we helped over 1,500 students find work placements across a range of sectors, with 250 employers attending 14 on-campus skills and careers fairs.
