Westminster was a massive confidence boost. Once I completed my studies, I felt I had the necessary experience to go into the real world. Before I started the course, I was not sure what to expect. My course managed to simulate the real world and newsroom so well that I knew I had it in me to be a good journalist.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
When I was looking for a postgraduate course, I wanted to choose something practical. I didn’t just want to sit in a classroom, I wanted hands-on experience. Westminster looked like it could offer me just that.
How has your experience been studying in London?
I have never regretted being in London – it is so full of opportunities!
Tell us about your course (What did you particularly enjoy about your programme)?
I really enjoyed how quickly we went from theory to practice and how I was able to experience so many things within my one-year course. We had the opportunity to create radio and TV bulletins, shoot documentaries, experiment with new technology and do live coverage of breaking news and events. I particularly enjoyed our overnight live coverage of the 2019 general elections (which we all chose to take part in).
How did you find the academic/ lecturer support as part of your studies?
I was blessed with some of the most helpful lecturers I have ever met! Their support was amazing. My Final Project supervisor gave me the confidence and support I needed. Especially after my second semester, when my course went fully online due to the pandemic.
Were there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?
Yes 100%! The radio and TV studios and TV newsroom. It felt surreal learning in these environments – it felt like a real newsroom.
Tell us about any activities that you undertook outside of your course (e.g. course related trips, study abroad, sports clubs, societies and any competitions)?
We went on a tour of the Guardian offices and Sky studios. We attended a court hearing and undertook a three-day filming trip in Nottingham. This was all in the first 6 months, as my course then went online due to the pandemic.
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
If in doubt, go and visit Westminster — either during an Open Day or book a Campus Tour. I knew immediately this is where I wanted to study when I saw the campus. The atmosphere is great!
What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?
Definitely meeting people from all other continents. We had many deep interesting discussions during class and it was amazing to hear from many different points of view. Also, the beautiful library at Harrow made studying way easier!
What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?
How quickly time flies when you’re having fun.
