Meeting people from across the world, with diverse views, values, languages, and cultures, and absolute respect for each other was the best part of being a student here at Westminster.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
After completing my undergraduate degree, I was eager to study Linguistics further. I had specific criteria in mind for a master's program, and when I came across the program at the University of Westminster, it not only met my requirements, but the structure of the modules also seemed very organised and well-designed. That's what led me to enthusiastically share the idea of pursuing a master's at Westminster with everyone around me, and ultimately, I was able to make it happen.
How has your experience been studying in London?
Studying at the University of Westminster has been an exciting and insightful experience, quite different from my home country, Bangladesh. I'm glad I took this opportunity to come here and immerse myself in the educational, cultural, linguistic, and social aspects of living in London.
What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?
This might sound a bit cheesy, but I fell in love with linguistics during my undergraduate studies. Pursuing my master's in this field at the University of Westminster has been deeply rewarding. The program covers aspects of the English language and provides access to the diversified features of other languages worldwide through the modules.
I enjoyed the optional modules on the course, which allowed me to gain knowledge and skills in peripheral linguistics beyond the core curriculum. Moreover, the various research projects we had to complete for coursework were exciting and educational.
Throughout the program, I've also learned to respect all languages equally through the thought-provoking discussions and seminars. This experience has been incredibly fulfilling for me as a linguistics student.
How have you found academic support as part of your studies?
The lecturers were always ready to explain issues further if there was anything we didn't comprehend during the lessons. On a few occasions, I went to some of the lecturers during their office hours to discuss academic matters, and they were terrific in offering their valuable advice and suggestions. I truly appreciate their support inside and outside the classrooms. I also need to mention my dissertation supervisor here, as he was incredibly prompt and patient with his feedback and suggestions, which made my life a lot easier during the last few months of the course.
Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?
The university's online library provides some of the most fascinating sources of learning, including books, articles, and journals. Also, accessing many international journals, websites, articles, and book chapters through the university email address has been a huge blessing.
Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service.
Towards the end of the course, I felt overwhelmed thinking about the possible career options awaiting me after graduation. So, I arranged a couple of one-on-one sessions with the Careers and Employability Service to discuss various options, which seemed quite beneficial.
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
First, research and learn what you want to study, as well as the related aspects, modules, and scopes of the field that you're interested in before choosing the university. Also, try to attend one or more of the open days arranged by the university to get a feel for the institution. The University of Westminster arranges online events, which can be beneficial for international students who may not be able to attend in-person open days. After that, going through the programmes and the modules they offer would be an excellent way to compare them with your initial research.
What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?
Meeting people from across the world, with diverse views, values, languages, and cultures, but with absolute respect for each other, was the best part of being a student here at Westminster. The university's location in the heart of London was another awesome aspect, as it allowed us to explore the bustling city with friends during break times and after classes. Also, being a linguistics graduate, I want to emphasise that in our course, there were students from all over the globe who had different and exciting languages to offer to the linguistic discussions during the lessons. This made my experience as a student here much more engaging and rewarding.
What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?
The open-mindedness and inclusive mentality among my fellow students, the lecturers and other staff of the university, was amazing. I wouldn't call it unexpected, though, as Westminster has long been known for celebrating diversity and inclusion.
Any other thoughts?
Being an international student and a champion over-thinker, I wasn't entirely sure how my experience at Westminster would turn out. Initially, my apprehension was well at the top of my mind, but I must say, after the first class, every single worry melted away. I not only learned a great deal in my favourite field of study, but I also felt like, after my graduation, I was equipped with the necessary knowledge to ease my way to future academic endeavours. Additionally, the confidence boost I gained from studying here further inspired me to pursue my career as a lecturer.
